Redesigning mental health care – ‘Lifejammed Diagnosis’ book synopsis

Introduction

Today I read new statistics on suicide in the Netherlands. These figures rise. And all kinds of institutions tumble over each other on setting statements on why this is. People tend to point the finger for example at recent cost reductions on the mental care system.

I think most studies miss the fundamental reason, my hypothesis: The mental health care pathology makes people often more sick and ‘life jammed’ than they were before entering that ‘system’.

I wrote a book on this, based on my own experiences of getting ‘jammed’ in life in 2007/2008. I refuse to use the word ‘depression’.  I was labeled ‘depressed’, and experienced no sense behind it. Putting this diagnosis on me was actually my final ‘sting of the knife’ which put me over the edge. To try to commit suicide. (In addition I got some other ‘life sentence’ feeling diagnosis, leaving no hope for me to pick up my role in society, and pay for our mortgage. Giving a big fear on needing to sell the house for a far more lower price than we bought it, due to the financial crisis following on Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in 2008 – this is one of the reasons why I want to help to solve the mortgage and debt issues in the world) In my personal research later, on how the mental care system does its analysis on people I found out that there was actually no analysis method for depression. So on what basis are people labeled ‘depressed’? (In the book ‘Diagnose Levensklem’ there is a more in depth elaboration on this subject)

I did not speak on the subject of suicide often in the recent years as I tend before. But I feel it is my call to do so. Many people do not like the subject. It remains heavily loaded. But I survived. Many do not. And, an interesting fact: All those organisations and institutions never contacted me after. To learn on why I recovered. This is a sign on the wall itself… My hypothesis: Investigating those ‘strange recoveries’ (I know quite some stories) will disclosure a counter productive pathology. And the end of the nowadays mental care system as we know it.

And billions of dollars are entangled with this, big pharma prescribing pills, psychiatrists loosing their jobs, etc. So, from that direction it requires people who dear to risk their jobs, and set their ego’s aside to create that new mental care system.

The book ‘Diagnose Levensklem’ (Dutch for ‘Diagnosis Lifejammed’) I don’t expect to be translated soon to English. So it feels senseful to publish this synopsis in English. And as many people seem to stop reading thick books, it might be senseful for Dutch readers as well. To grasp the essence in a view words.

Below I made a diagram of the about 7 diagnosis I got in less than a year time. I seemed to have to survive the ‘mental care system’ in addition of the life jamming situation I found my self in. About I won’t talk in this article, except mentioning that when I hear about somebody in the same situation I think: I can understand that you lost hope in life, and cannot find a solution your self.

We made the mental care system far to complex. Cause of peoples problems and solutions are far more simple than therapists state. But… we do often not have the tools to implement a solution, because that might require ‘little recovery villages’ for the more extreme situations. For example. And these do not exist yet. Or making a real transition in life. Leave the job and setting people were in. But where can they go?

Analysis of my case – Lifeline and diagnosis

Mental Health Care Revisited – Case Iwanjka Geerdink illustrating ‘stupidity’ in the nowadays pathology

The diagram above describes the ‘crazy’ thing of labeling me with about seven different diagnosis in nearly one year time. All making no sense in the end. And I heard quite some similar stories…

I hope many students in this field will start to do case studies and investigations on why the mental care system went -hypothesis- so ‘corrupt’. (I want to note that the mental health system does not stand alone in this, many society sub systems seem to have entered the end of a life cycle: banking, energy, food production, politics, law systems, etc. You are invited to read the book 2012, The Chaos Point, by Ervin Laszlo, describing these patterns elaborated profoundly).

I did some research myself. And what I read about how the nowadays mental care system developed said enough. Made it logical. For example: I read about Freud and how ‘his models’ where copied throughout the world: I read a book by Kate Millet, Sexual Politics, she describes how there is even a connection with powerful forces aiming to repress women in the USA: Freuds teachings gave a tool to declare women who ‘stood up’ as being ‘sick’, and ‘put hem away’, in such giving his models wings into the world.

Well, that system in essence seems now to be used in the mental care system (DSM V) globally.

This, of course is a very ‘short cut’ analysis, and it feels not my call to write a book on it. And Freud also brought a lot of good things. And as stated before: Maybe a his works got abused in a corrupt way to fulfill corrupt other powers… And many other people where or are involved in the creation of nowadays mental health care pathology. I hope many people start to feel the call to do so. We can learn from history.

Some essences from my viewpoint on the construction of a new ‘mental’ health care system

  1. Bring often found causes back to some essences. I came to three main ‘root causes’ of so it seems practically all ‘disorders’: A. Trauma in the past (incest, bullying, emotional empty parenting, etc.). B. Practical issues in the ‘now’ (debt, locked in life, relations, living isolated, over-stretched, parenting-load, etc.). C. Society. Read the book Veronica decides to die, by Paulo Coelho, and you know what I am pointing at. In this book a young girl who seem to ‘have it all’ decides to commit suicide. She cannot stand the ‘evil’ things in society anymore. (Is there any psychiatrist which has given somebody this logical diagnosis?) I think many -especially you people- suffer deep withing from seeing so much bad things in the world: Nature dying, many adults not being nice with each other, lying society leaders, etc. And, for me very important: Many grow up in a semi isolated state. Living alone together sort of. That is why I strive to contribute to more communal parenting and living time in general. Mark my words: I don’t mention that I strive for communities(!).  In the book ‘NovAMORe’ I wrote more on this subject (subtitle: Newfamly, novAMORe and Emotude, a Living Love Manifest).  You can download it on my books page.
  2. Analyse the ‘system’ in which somebody is. The person is mostly not sick, it is a social context diagram which is mostly ‘ sick’. The book A normal Personality, by Stephen Reiss, can help in understanding these dynamics.
  3. Design a recovery path, combine ideally 50% peer group or peer experiences in this. People who partly encountered the same, but recovered, or are further in recovery. I read in a Dutch book that actually during World War I a psychiatrist found out that organizing peer support ‘communal living’, facilitated by him / his staff worked far better than individual sessions. These findings were ‘neglected’ by the mental health care powers of that time [Link to the section, in Dutch]. A reason I, with fellow social entrepreneurs started to organize camps ourselves (but feels to require far more occurrences and special focus, and organized by city governments).

And often somebodies situation is a combination of the aspects above. (Extreme) religion often also takes a part, for me a reason to contribute to bringing the essence of global religions to the surface. Which is for me ‘living love’.  And many other parts of religious systems conflict with living love. I hope people themselves start to reflect on this as well, and start discussion groups with there peers.

Some final words

I started this article with the rising number of suicides in the Netherlands. And that the ‘mental care system’ probably will say that it is a result by cost cutting. I hope political parties will read this article. And find an argument that actual cost cutting in the nowadays mental care system makes -how painful a well for clients, there is no alternative yet- makes sense.

At the same hand cities will hopefully start to continue and enlarge for example the above sketches examples of peer support camps. Which can be organized with -I estimate- about 5% costs of what a ‘treatment’ costs nowadays. And will prove to be positive for the people involved, compared with many negative experiences in nowadays care system.

My hypothesis is we can create an alternative which brings down the suicide number with more than 30%, and maybe even 90%. We can use the 21th century to experiment with alternative instruments and scale up those who work.

And… nobody is to blame. People working in the nowadays care system did not do so to make people ill. And actually, more and more people in that system become ill themselves. So, it might be good for all involved that the whole system gets re-invented.

Psychiatry

It might sound strange, I don’t aim for a world without psychiatrists. I read a book on Jung. I liked the way he seemed to have worked: Being a clients equal. Conscious on that a new encounter would also change him (not doing so explains partly for me the high rate of psychiatrists getting sick themselves). Open for emotion and contact (but remaining professional or better: Aware of his role and the possible effect of this role on his clients). See the essence of a ‘spirit’ in nature, and its potential on giving signals on direction for people involved. The same for dreams. Being open for a kind of spirituality. Actually ‘psyche’ means ‘soul / spirit’ (Greek language, psyche-iatry). So, if psychiatry picks up this path again, there is a great future ahead for this profession I feel.

SOCIETY!!!

My lasts words are aimed for society. Which more and more for me feels like an anti-society: People living in isolation next to each other in appartement (apartments, is that another word for ‘separation houses’?). People working to earn $$$ (sign of the beast for me in biblic terms). Getting sick. Children being in the tension of it all. Getting sick often. So, if we want to help our mental care system, we should start digging in our society building blocks. And start experimenting with for example social cohesive living zones (in which people choose to live with each other). And get rid of a debt based currency making things constantly more expensive and soul-less (Ziny Currency is about that).

This is the most important part: Cure society. Or maybe more reachable: Rebuild society;-)

Eating meat might kill you

See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHdfeR8dfJo

Around Christmas 2017… I do my work during a journey, often in cafe’s.

And I see so much focus on eating meat (fish is for me meat as well).

I feel a strong conviction that eating meat is not good. ‘Treat life as you want to be treated your self’ (Mozes words translated to life in general). So everyone being ‘religious’ in that sense should not eat meat. Where did the corruption enter?

I realized that in ‘early days’, especially in winter times, meat was the only food. But as from now we can import food from places where it grows (which is also quite bad ecologically). Or we can even start to consider to follow the ‘natural food supply’: be there were it grows ((human) Transhumance thought). And, in addition a inner voice suspects eating meat to be ‘lazy’: Just shoot a bullet and you can eat. And a typical masculine ‘funny game’, doing ‘cool’ (hunting). Again, I hope strongly the more ‘care taking’ feminine side of us moves in. And we start realizing we can make beautiful food forests (which hardly need effort to maintain, no more yearly plowing and seeding, etc.), or adapt us more to ‘what grows somewhere’, permaculture, etc.

Which associates me to the mythical figure of Artemis… What I read is that she is the protector of nature. I also read that she is the goddess of the hunt. Well, I hope she hunts the hunters! (I cannot believe that this goddess hunts on animals for pleasure or food… do you?).

Habits. My parent were children of farmers. ‘Off course you eat meat’. ‘Without meat you will miss certain nutrients’. I’am afraid for the meat eat lovers, that this is not true (by eating balanced, fruits, vegetables, sport enough, etc.).

And, I have a strong feeling (which I cannot prove) is that eating meat has also something to do with our emotional harness and internal demons: The thicker our harness, and the more demons, the more desire for meat. But you may immediately forget this, as I said, I cannot proof this, and I don’t feel the desire to proof it.

For me not hurting animals is enough reason, In addition I believe via eating meat, you swallow in a super aggregated manner the ‘stress energy’ (of translated physically: hormones/ chemicals), which a animals collects in its oppressed life time (people who saw a ‘normal’ pig-farm from within, or a slaughterhouse will know what I mean, I have been there). And consider the maximum stress hormones an animal generates just before its forced and often cruel death. The fear, anxiety, etc., it is all collected in the dead body. Normally these stress residuals leave the animal within some days or weeks. But not with the meat we eat: the ‘animal’s cleaning up system’ stops directly after killing it, leaving all the stress hormones in… yes, the meat we eat.

What can this do with peoples emotional well being? (eating all these stress hormones?).

And than I don’t mention all the chemicals used to maximize growth of the animal and the food it eats, in the meat growing industry.

A ‘hopeful’ tendency for fish: Oceans get so much poisoned that the fish is already becoming poisonous for mankind (interesting cosmic resonance, that ‘fish’ in French is named ‘pois(s)on’ already;-) ).

And, as said earlier on my blog on ‘barking dogs’, I feel that nature cannot defend itself. And via cosmic reciprocal law, doing harm strikes back on us. Via ourselves: human to human (fight, rape, war, hurt, emotional suppression parents-children and the other way around, Fukushima like disasters, terrorists attacks, unhealthy presidents, etc.). [Listen also to Pink Floyds, On The Turning Away, …just a case of all the suffering…]

I read studies that people eating meat have a 40 % higher chance on (breast) cancer. If that is not enough reason to stop eating meat? Or, if one does not stop, maybe we should call eating meat -liking smoking- an addiction (or ‘escapism’). I hope we as humanity soon start become conscious on this addiction, without blame or shame.  And that we can eliminate the reasons for this addiction.

I am happy I don’t need to proof everything I write;-)

And in such the animals might live happily around us!

Amen.

PS: Why is it, that manufacturers of cigarettes must add all kinds of horrible pictures on there cigarette boxes, and meat manufactures don’t have to do this (health risks might be comparable, the difficulty on letting go of the habit also…)? Raise a question to your political party representant on this?

PPS: Collective conscious does beautiful things, for those who did not see it, watch the movie Zootropolis. A crossover between the Flowtowns habitat concept and the essence of this blog article.

Barking dogs enter my consciousness…

No… this isn’t a part of some kind of a thriller tale. Well, maybe it is…

It is 2 december 2016, I am at Lanzarote for a 11 day stay. I wake up early in the morning due to barking dogs outside. I wonder on the phenomenon on which I have been wondering many times: why do I hear so often dogs bark, and what does it mean to me? I look at the clock 4:44AM. Feels like time to get up and write down the wonderings which I find within.

No animals behind fences
I asked a good friend of mine, who stayed at Findhorn, on the policy the people there have on animals. If I remember correctly he said ‘no animals behind fences’. I like that statement: short, clear and simple. And since then I try to live it my self.

Signs…
For me the barking dogs expresses a not-good situation. And off course, there are historic reasons why the dogs are kept ‘in prison’: to protect a house or owner, I am told. Sounds logical.
But is that in ‘modern times’ a good reason? So, for me harshly saying, and many will say they do not agree: for me keeping dogs behind walls can be considered as animal mis treatment.

But…
But… at the other hand, I don’t think it is a good idea to unleash all those ‘domestic’ animals: they don’t know anymore how to survive in nature. So, for there lifetime maybe let things as they are. And yes, many animals which where ‘taken’ as a ‘pet’ and after abandoned are better of in the care of some good care takers. But, maybe, it wasn’t a good thing to create baby dogs in a not-natural situation at all?

I believe…
I believe – for now, opinions might change- that in general:

“It is not a good thing to keep animals ‘behind fences’ for animation or feeding of humans”

And for me feeding pets with meat from the ‘meat industry’ also feels highly strange…

Quantum field or spirilogical reciprocity
And if the above is ‘true’… I also feel it is logical from ‘spiritual’ perspective that if we do harm to living creatures, harm will be done to us.

Why?
Another harsh statement… I often wonder why people ‘need’ to have a pet. I am fond of animals, but free. I cannot deny that when I wonder on this, I feel a connection with a deprived society. And I cannot ‘blame’ these people, because there feelings are logical and true towards the wish of companionship… if this is a reason. If these words are true. Many ‘ifs’…

Babies and pets
And… there is another feeling which raises to my mind: that people often seem to treat their pets as their babies (and babies as pets). And, another observation: when do people ‘take a child’ to fill ‘a (emotional) void’ (which also, as a parent, forces me to look in that mirror). When is creating a child a good thing?

Sharing and social connecting
I believe touching these ‘taboos’ and let all the feeling be, and express and flow, form the keys to a more good society. In many aspects, whether it is achieving a healthy human -stable- population on earth (less baby-birth), or less wars and animal and people abuse. And I feel that a more affective society, whether it is parent-child affection, or affection in ‘mini societies’ and more sharing, can lead to far more peace.

Conclusion: Affinity-full living settings and healing
That is why I find the concept of social ‘affinity’  in creating housing architecture so important. And ‘healing’ of the ‘wounded parts’ in us. And avoid wounding children into wounded adults which start wounding their children on their turn, etc.

And remember: guilt is a useless and sense less concept.

Comments later on (newest first):

  • February 2018: On pets and cats… being at a Spanish campsite we put up our tent. We notice a lot of cats, I guess at least twenty. Already within some hours we smell cats urine… we inspect the tent, and we notice multiple spots of cat urine. Some studying on the Internet mentions cats start to do so if they are in distress. ‘In distress?’ I think… ‘Why?’. Than I realize that the cats have been dominated, domesticated. Taken from their wild nature. And now live a life of distress, partly lost their nature. And humans did so, and I think it was not their choice… Than I thought, what would be the most good respons to do now? For them, for us… If they keep on procreating, the place will be filled more and more with cats who are confused and -maybe- suffering. People told us some cats got already castrated, and that it has been far worse. I feel reluctant on this: I would not like to be castrated, so it feels not good to do it to another life fife form. But after some more wondering and outweighing pro’s and cons, I start to share the viewpoint that castrating might be the best option. And try to give them a good as possible cat life. And then, theoretically, this animal -maybe- abuse will fade away out of it self. At least as people do not continue breeding new domesticated cats for their animation or pleasure. At the same campsite there are at least 30 dogs. And there are signs that dogs are only allowed at a line. Quite some barking and ‘dog bosses’ pulling at the ropes and shouting and the dogs. ‘Poor dogs’, I think… same story. Crazy animals, those humans.
